Welcome to the Holiday Edition of the Monadnock Runner News.. * So we are set for tomorrow night. It is one of our most popular themes. "Fourth Of July." We will be decked out in red, white and blue(unless you are color blind, and it just won't be nearly as much fun in black and white). "Star- Spangled Bananas," " Francis Scott Kiwis," "Paul Revere Root Beer," "Uncle Sam Spam," "Let Freedom Ring Dings", "Lexington Green Tea," Old Glory Oreos," "Bill Of Rice", "Red,White & Blueberry Pie," and many more prizes all pertaining to our theme may be up for grabs.Come on down.Bring a buddy to Oak Park,Greenfield,Tue 1 July at 6:30 pm.Why pay 25 .00 to run a high priced race and collect another shirt? Here.. $ 5.00.... grassroots. Real deal. * Which segues into my next point here....thanks, Newt . Mr T (he is as strong as the former body guard for Mohammed Ali....maybe more so) is organizing a wagon train from his house in Surry for those who would like to participate in our races. This is appreciated.Keene area runners would be most welcome(everyone is).Newt is the poet laureate of Sizzler nation and a blessing to boot.Gracious, smart, humorous and a very decent man.Would love to see 50 out tomorrow..or more .Let's save the sport from modernism and maintain tradition, roots, sanity. * Hey.. Jeff Richardson hit the trifecta last week.. he won a prize for finishing, answered a trivia query correctly, and his # was called in the raffle. It was an all -strawberry night for the man from Westmoreland.. Jeff selected strawberry milk, a pint of freshly picked strawberries, and even a dog dish so he could have someplace to compartmentalize his booty.Strawberries and sberry milk together....in a dog dish..mmmmmmmmm! * Points Leader Shauna Burt will not be with us tomorrow evening. Could she be competing in the(Yes,THE) Tour De France ?Wow! She did mention something about trying out her new bicycle.I am not sure I would give new wheels a trail run at such a huge event..with so much on the line. But I wouldn't bet against her either.Hopefully she will be back to join us and win not only the TDF but the World Sizzler Cup as well.Imagine having BOTH trophies on the shelf!? Go for it,girl! Or maybe she was just going on vacation. Sometimes I get my facts mixed up. * Well, she has done it again. No, not Shauna.Eliza Webber. This horse can race and can compete with anyone mano a (wo)mano.Fresh off busting the gender barrier with an impressive win outright over Mikey Cazmeister at Nuby , the feisty Stoddard lassie set a new course record for women at Norway Hill. Her 18:51 established a new mark, besting the old standard of 19:03 by Kirstin Schillemat(2 x champ) in 2002. Eliza nearly took the race overall(again)from Defending men's champ Mr Ed Glidden.Oh.... you should have seen Edward's face as he neared the finish line! My goodness. He was giving it all.Read below for story details. Congratulations,Eliza! And Eddie, too! What a thrill to witness these two fine athletes in action giving it all.Is there any other way to be in life.I hate lukewarm, tepid, half -hearted.lame anything.Nice work, kids! * Goffstown..now there is a town you don't see mentioned much!Sat I journeyed there(vs South Berwick Maine for the Strawberry Race). It was only 10.00 day of race to run, and 8.00 pre-entry.It was the 29th annual. An odd distance at 5.2 miles, I loved it.It was old school. They had a digital clock, an out and back loopy and rural route, and it doesn't break the bank. The same man,Dave French, has directed it all 29 years.Congrats.Mr French! They had all 29 years of shirts plastered on the walls at registration. Attractive awards that looked like mini-Heisman trophies. No, it wasn't on coolrunning. But does it need to be? This one gets 4 stars from me. Long may it live. *Three races upcoming on the Fourth in New Hampshire that I know of! Merrimack 5k, Andover 5k trail run, and Keene's four miler. And Massachusetts has a bazillion. Don't go away. Results, point standings after 5 races, and Strawberry Race story from Norway Hill below. |

Ed Vs Eliza in Race For The Strawberries 'Glidden Takes Sizzler 3 miler @ Norway Hill,Wins Strawberries'Tuesday Night saw quite a battle between two runners of similar talent at the Summer Sizzler races in Hancock. Last week Eliza Webber of Stoddard duked it out with tough guy Mike Casner of Peterborough, and came away with a 3 second win over the five time Sizzler Champ. The venue changed from Nuby To Norway , but the knock 'em down, drag 'em out battle remained the same. But this time the feisty Eliza was beaten to the finish line by Greenfield's Ed Glidden, who stopped the clock in 18:47, four ticks ahead of Miss Webber.Eliza had the lead going into 'The Hill' at 2 miles, then Ed passed her. But...the defending champ stopped and walked for a spell( I think to chase butterflies or swat wasps).Eliza seized the day, moving ahead of Ed.With the pressure of the entire male gender on his shoulders,Ed mustered up enough gumption, passed Webber on the down hill, and outkicked her to the end.In third was Heniker's Clayton George in 19:21,with poppa and son tandem Alec & Scott McGovern rounding out the fourth and fifth positions in 19:37 and 19:44.Second lassie for the eve was Heather Searles,Henniker,in 20:15.Series leader Shauna Burt,Antrim, solidified her hold on the top spot with a 23:49 effort, good enough for third anmong ladies.Rindge's Jenn Helsel completed the route in 26:40, for fourth, while Libster Twitchell returned to Sizzler Nation after a one week respite, running in fifth and recording time of 26:46.It was 'Race For The Strawberries' in Sizzler City, and the rosy red fruits were in abundance. The faithful even had strawberry shampoo ,candles, candy, and jam to choose from at the prize table.A total of 25 athletes partook.Next week the carnival moves to Greenfield's Oak Park as New Hampshire's oldest continuous foot race series hits the half -way mark. The Sizzlers celebrate the Fourth Of July a few days early with the annually popular theme 'Run For Independence!' The distance is four miles, the cost is five dollars, start time is 6:35(so Shauna can make it) and it will all happen next Tuesday,July 1st.For questions and concerns contact Mr Birse via email at sizzlermania@hotmail.com or by phone at 525-9357.See you tomorrow night at Oak Park!Mr Birse, Fireworks Director, Sizzler Nation |
