Summer Sizzler #2
Race for Black Fly Pie

Hancock, NH

Could it be the beginning of a dynasty? Four race wins in a season make a dynasty.Maybe five.Troy French is on his way.He cruised the O.P. route in 25:05 Tue night, leading a swarm of angry hornets across the line at 'Race For The Black Fly Pie'. TF is from Antrim and will be a soph at Springfield College in a few months. He has been with us for many moons..Yes.. he is an elder statesman at age 19.

Scottie McGovern turned in a 26:20 to record his highest finish at a sizzler event. I hope he shows up for the race next week.I think his dad was the 1972 Dem. nominee for Pres. against Nixon.Or at least has the same last name.He is ageless... like a Rolex.

Then we have the comeback kid..Mike Casner..who began slow.... and then they dropped like flies(given the theme..that makes sense). Cazmeister proved cagey. The can of Raid didn't hurt either. We were all surprised to see the 5x champ pull in to the park in third overall with a 27:35.He is hungry for his sixth title.Woo-hooo.

For the ladies, young lassie Emily Sawich topped the field of damsels in 27:49.She hails from Antrim and is a Con-Val runner, I think. Shauna Burt got a late start(I think the trolley was late) but still landed on her feet and made it to the finsh line in second with a 30:28.Not half bad.She is the series leader and I hope she doesn't get nervous about it.Sometimes the pressure becomes too much and folks crack. She wil be okay.

I must thank her for the rhubarb pie she baked.Whoever picked it made for a happy camper. But it was to nice to eat.Shauna's artistic side was displayed..and carved a nifty-looking dragon fly into its center.Wish someone got a picture of it. Nicely done.Classy.. both the woman and the pie.

Bronze medalist for the ladies...why...that would be Shannon Glidden, who did well on her home turf, posting a 32:27.Greenfield is also known as Gliddenville.Shannon is our defending female champ and is right on Shauna's heels.Stay tuned. It could be like a Hilary-Barack duel , going right down to the wire!

RACE NOTES & NEWS...................................

* The 28 runners meant a 75% increase over the previous week.Pretty good. Don't you wish your 401k got that kind of a yield? Hah! Fat chance.

* Thanks to Molly Anfuso & the Greenfield Rec for allowing us to host the races there. It is a cool place:picnic tables, kitchen facilities, horse track, indoor toilets, ferris wheels, roller coasters and sleigh rides(not sure on those last three).Super venue, nifty course.

* I measured the course to exactly 4.0000000 miles on Monday with my high tech gizmo thing -a -ma- jig that is most accurate.

* Welcome... to several new runners..among them Mindy White, who got her first taste of competition.Correct! Her first race ever. was Sizzler..on her home turf.Only been running for 4 weeks and under the ttuelage of Dave 'Monty' Hall. Both are Greenfielders ..and firefighters.

* No issue with stopwatches this week. They all worked.Whew! No nitro pill-popping this week.Plus, Troy didn't wear one this week.If he left his chronometer home the first race up at Norway Hill..uh-oh.. we'd have had places and names with no times. We had several tickers at the ready at Oak Park.

*Hearty Congrats to Andrew Hunt ,who I understand won a race in Peterborough last Saturday outright! All ages and abilities.Has an 11 y/o ever won a foot race with adults in the field before? Not sure...It was a 5k sponsored by Big Brothers/Big Sisters.Very impressive.Andrew has two top ten finsishes in his first two sizzlers of the year.

* The Fitzwilliam 5k is Sat June 7th.Lobvely town.Pretty course. It is listed on coolrunning. They only drew 40 or 45 last year.used to get many more.I ran the first annual they had in 1991.I recommned it.

*Oranges are not big seelers at the sizzlers anymore.I used to get 2 bags. Now I have leftovers with only one bag.Too sticky. The choice seems to be H2O melon.

* After 3 races. our overall leader are Tro yFrench and Shauna Burt, with Scott McGovern and Shannon Glidden in hot pursuit.Hope to get divison leaders for you after the next race.

*Thanks to volunteers Bob Fogg,Ross Ramey,Molly Anfuso,Vivian Bolduc, Ruth Bergmann and Mr Hunt for their help Tuesday evening.Merci.Lost without you all.

*We did have fun run. Cap'n Bob was in charge of that.It featured a sibling rivalry 'twixt Carter and Brayden Hunt.Carter took it this time.. but wait til next week.Once around the track is half a mile.I meaured it and it is very close.

*Next week is 'The New Hampshire Primary Race'.Yup. So mosey on over to the Depot by 6:30 pm(Shauna.. that's 6:30. yoo-hoo) for the 2.5 miler.Challenging, rolling, dirt roads. Fee is a mere $5.00.Prizes, raffles, trivia, goodies at the end. You will have a good old time, and get some exercise too.It does get buggy, so bring some repellent.

You may win the following:

  • * Clinton Impeaches
  • * McCain French Fries
  • * Kucinich Spinich
  • * Dole pineapple
  • * Bush Beans
  • * McCain French Fries
  • * Electoral College Cabbage
  • *Obama Baby Back Ribs
  • * Election DAy Milky Way
  • * 'Vote-For-Me-Iced Tea' and many more

So show your colors.Wear buttons, t-shirts, support your candidate.Don't be shy. I am going to try to get someone there politcal. But wait! We already have somebody.Sizzler citizen Sterling Abram is a selectman from Dublin.Honest fellow too.Maybe he can run for senator or congressman.Hmmmm.... TH
